“Game On,” from Liberty University, is a 30-minute weekly sports program that covers collegiate sports, offers feature stories, and profiles the athletes and coaches at the heart of all the action. As one of there featured stories on the show the they featured our Pastor, John Cartwright.
John Cartwright graduated from Sharon Hill High School in 1964. He was a scholar-athlete, earning ten varsity letters in football, baseball, and basketball. John received offers from over thirty colleges and universities, and from the then Kansas City (Oakland) Athletics. He chose to further his education, and his athletic career, at the U.S. Naval Academy. In 1968, John was commissioned an officer in the U.S. Navy. That same year, he married his childhood sweetheart, Thelma Themens, and began his tour of duty, which included a long deployment in Vietnam.
In his sophomore year, John succeeded Roger Staubach as quarterback. He went on to break 13 of Staubach's records, and set 7 other records of his own.
In the early days of Liberty University's existence, John became assistant football coach under Lee "Rock" Royer, and succeeded him as head coach at Liberty in 1973, after Rock's sudden death in a plane crash. He graduated from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary in 1976. He returned to his native Delaware County in 1977, and founded the Calvary Independent Baptist Church.
From Passer to Pastor
The 1967 football season was an exciting one for Navy football fans. The U.S. Naval Academy Midshipmen shocked the football world with victories over such national powers as Penn State, Michigan, Syracuse and Army. Three of Navy's opponents that year played in major bowl games. It was Navy's most exciting season since the 1963 team, quarterbacked by Roger Staubach, went to the Cotton Bowl.
The quarterback for Navy in 1967 was Senior John Cartwright, completing his third year as Navy's starting quarterback. In the video "From Passer To Pastor" you will hear John share his personal testimony of faith in Jesus Christ and how God has led in his life since that exciting season. In his message he will explain how this chapter in 1967 Navy football history can be used to help you find peace with God for all eternity.
